What to wear for your family session

I love family sessions, it is a chance for me to capture your family being natural, having fun and create lasting memories that will be treasured for years to come. However, a question I get asked all the time is, what should we wear for the session. It is something important to consider, as choosing the right clothing can significantly impact the look and feel of your images. In this blog post, I will share tips on what you should consider when picking clothes for a photoshoot, including specific advice for Dads, Mums and the kids!

Co-ordinated, not matchy-matchy

Clothing choices can really date an image, if we look back at family photography in the 90s for example, there was a strong trend of everyone wearing white t-shirts and blue jeans, something that when we look back on now, we find funny and quite cheesy! We are aiming for a timeless look and something that will look great on your wall for years to come. The aim is to wear outfits that co-ordinate, rather than identical outfits. Choose a colour scheme of complementary colours and work with that palette. Co-ordinating outfits can create a harmonious look whilst allowing each family member's personality to shine through.

Comfort is Key

Ensure everyone feels comfortable in their outfits, especially the children. If the kids aren't comfortable, it will show in the images. Opt for clothing that fits well, allowing for freedom of movement. Avoid scratchy fabrics or clothing that will need to be constantly re-adjusted.

Classic and Timeless

Fashion has many trends, but keep in mind these photos will be cherished for years to come. Try to choose classic and timeless styles, that won't look dated in the future. Avoid large logos or patterns - they can distract from the main focus - which is you and your beautiful family.

Location Considerations

Consider the location of your photoshoot when choosing outfits. If it is a natural setting early tones and soft colours blend beautifully with the surroundings. For an urban setting, bolder colours can create vibrant contrast. Keep in mind that the focus should remain on your family, so avoid outfits that clash with the background.

Complement the weather

Depending on the time of year can also help to determine what colours to wear:

Spring/Summer - Summers trends such as sun dresses, nice sandals (Not basic flips flops) lightweight coloured trousers and a light button up shirt are great. Lighter colours are gorgeous in the summer, such as pastels or light neutrals. A lot of shoots at this time of year are done outside, so perhaps avoid wearing greens and darker colours, as you will blend in with the background too much.

Autumn - At this time of year, layers are the best way to go! A nice top, with a light jacket or jumper, perhaps a light scarf. Darker colours are perfect for this time of year and look nice against the oranges. yellows of the background.

Winter - Again layers are really helpful, in case you get too hot. Accessorise with gloves and hats to make a really cute winter image!

Put away the watches!

Watches can be incredibly distracting in images, so if you have a fitness watch or anything like that, I would recommend taking it off for your session. Same with bobbles around wrists!

Tips for Dads

Dads often prefer a fuss free approach, but it important to put some thought into the outfit. Opt for well fitted shirts or polos in solid colours or very subtle patterns. Pair them with some tailored chinos or dark jeans for a polished look. Avoid oversized or baggy clothing and prioritise a neat appearance.

Tips for Mums

There are always so many options for Mums when it comes to outfits. Flowy dresses or skirts can create a beautiful elegant look. Choose solid colours or subtle patterns that complement the colour scheme. Consider your comfort while striking a balance between casual and dressy. Don't forget to accessorise with some simple jewellery to add a touch of personality.

Tips for Kids

When dressing children, prioritise their comfort and let their personalities shine. For younger kids, opt for comfortable, age appropriate outfits, that allow them to move freely. Layers can add texture and interest to their outfits. Avoid busy patterns and opt for coordinating colours instead. Don't forget to bring spare clothes, in case a change is required!

Here are a couple of colour guides on what colours complement each other, this should help when you are picking outfits for a photoshoot.

I hope that helps, if you have any further questions or want to ask anything about a family photoshoot, please let me know!

Thanks
